Cascina Sciorio
Cascina Sciorio is a family estate on the hills just outside Costigliole d'Asti, in the Monferrato Astigiano heartland of Barbera. The Gozzelino family has worked this land for four generations, and in the 1990s brothers Giuseppe and Mauro Gozzelino founded the winery proper, naming it after the Sciorio farmstead (cascina) where it stands.
The estate covers about six hectares on a spur of the Bastia hill, a site once occupied by the medieval town of Loreto, which was destroyed by the French. The soils are calcareous clay of marine origin, laid down in the ancient Tertiary sea basin that covered Piemonte around 12 million years ago, and the vineyards sit at roughly 270 to 280 metres with a westerly aspect.
Old Barbera vines form the backbone of the 'historic' vineyards, Vigna Sciorio and Vigna Beneficio, the latter named after an old bequest of a house and land. Newer plots add Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah (Vigna Furmjia), Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; the Vigna Levi parcel, once home to the Levi family's brick and tile kiln, has been replanted to low-yielding Chardonnay. Cabernet has a local pedigree here: the noble Asinari family is documented growing it around Costigliole in the mid-1800s.
The style is generous and powerful. The Barberas ferment in cement and age for long periods, in large Slavonian oak for Sciorio and in barrique for Beneficio, and both are held back in bottle before release. The family farms sustainably, aiming to minimise chemical inputs, and uses indigenous yeasts for many of its wines. Their barrel-fermented Chardonnay Levi was named among the 100 Vini Rivelazione in the AIS Vitae 2027 guide.
