Ermanno Costa is a family estate at Cascina Spagnolo in San Defendente, a hamlet of Canale in the Roero. The family bought the late 19th century farmhouse in 1978, with 2 hectares of vines around it, and Ermanno bottled his first Nebbiolo d'Alba in 1981. Today the third generation, Simone, Giorgia and Fabrizia, farms 6 hectares laid out like an amphitheatre around the farmhouse in the San Defendente cru, and looks after vineyard, cellar and sales themselves. They vinify only their own grapes and want to stay small. The range is short: Roero Arneis, Chardonnay and Viognier Balin, the Brachetto rosé Rösefiur, and three reds, Alba, Barbera d'Alba Superiore and Roero Riserva, all with plain white labels and a different capsule colour for each wine. Canale sits on the left bank of the Tanaro, in the Roero hills facing the Langhe.

Wines from Ermanno Costa

  • Alba: Alba DOC, Nebbiolo 70%, Barbera 30%, Red. A red blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera, aged one year in steel and about 20 months in large French oak.
  • Balin: Chardonnay 80%, Viognier 20%, White. A white blend of Chardonnay and Viognier, made in stainless steel and aged there for 6 months.
  • Barbera d'Alba Superiore: Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC, Barbera 100%, Red. A 100% Barbera aged one year in steel and about 20 months in 500-litre French oak tonneaux.
  • Roero Arneis: Roero Arneis DOCG, Arneis 100%, White. A 100% Arneis from the San Defendente cru, fermented and aged in stainless steel for 6 months.
  • Rösefiur: Vino Rosato, Brachetto (Grappolo lungo del Roero) 100%, Rosé. A rosé from 100% Brachetto Grappolo lungo del Roero, named for roses and flowers, with a floral scent.
  • San Defendente: Roero Riserva DOCG, Nebbiolo 100%, Red. A 100% Nebbiolo Roero Riserva from the San Defendente cru, aged 32 months in steel and large French oak.
