Dott. G. Cappellano

Dott. G. Cappellano

Cappellano is a small family estate in Serralunga d'Alba whose story starts in 1870, when the notary Filippo Cappellano gathered about 60 hectares of farmland into one property. The vineyard today is far smaller, roughly 2.6 hectares, and by Teobaldo Cappellano's own count the cellar fills around 20,000 bottles a year. Vines are worked with organic methods (copper, sulphur, no herbicide) and the cellar keeps intervention to a minimum.

The range is short. There is a Barbera d'Alba and two Barolos, all from the Gabutti vineyard, one of them from ungrafted Michet vines that Teobaldo planted in the late 1980s. Then there is the Barolo Chinato, devised by the pharmacist Giuseppe Cappellano and still made to the family recipe. Serralunga is one of the eleven communes of the Barolo zone, and Gabutti is one of its named crus.

Wines from Dott. G. Cappellano

  • Barbera: Barbera d'Alba DOC, Barbera, Red. Barbera from the Gabutti vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. The estate bottles it only when it judges the wine ready, and in the size it considers most suitable.
  • Barolo Chinato: Vino aromatizzato, Nebbiolo, Fortified. Aromatised wine from aged Barolo, made to the recipe of Giuseppe Cappellano, a Serralunga d'Alba pharmacist with a shop in Turin, who perfected it in the late 1800s. Meant as a meditation wine.
  • Otin Fiorin Piè Franco: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barolo from ungrafted (piè franco) nebbiolo Michet vines in the Gabutti vineyard, a return to the pre-phylloxera planting system. It shows the Serralunga imprint without affectation.
  • Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris: Barolo DOCG, Nebbiolo, Red. Barolo from the Gabutti vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, made from nebbiolo and described by the estate as Serralunga to the core, from natural farming choices. Label reads Otin Fiorin, Piè Rupestris.
