Cantine Carel
Cantine Carel is a family cellar on Strada Loreto in Costigliole d'Asti, where the Alto Monferrato meets the Bassa Langa. It started in the early 1900s in Calosso and moved to Costigliole under Adriano Carelli. A young descendant took over in the 1990s and brought in the oenology he had studied; today the fourth generation, Marta and Matteo Carelli, runs the cellar with their father's guidance.
The range is short and centred on Barbera: a Barbera d'Asti and a Nizza from Nizza vineyards, plus a Chardonnay brut made by the Charmat method and Magpie, a lightly sparkling sweet Moscato must named after the magpie on the family's labels. Costigliole sits in the province of Asti, in Barbera country, and Nizza is a DOCG of its own for Barbera grown around Nizza Monferrato.
