Giovanni e Lorenzo Frea

Giovanni e Lorenzo Frea

Giovanni and Lorenzo Frea are brothers who run this family farm at San Rocco, a hamlet of Montaldo Roero on the left bank of the Tanaro, in the Roero hills of the province of Cuneo. The farm has been handed down through the generations and was reshaped in 2002.

Two wines carry the Roero DOCG. Galarà is a Roero Arneis from vineyards in Montaldo Roero, kept 3 to 6 months in stainless steel and 2 months in bottle, around 10,000 bottles a year. Muschiavin comes from the vineyard of the same name in Montaldo Roero and spends 12 to 15 months in small oak barrels, around 2,000 bottles. Barbera and Nebbiolo from the surrounding hills complete the range. Roero soils are sandy and well drained, which suits Arneis and gives Nebbiolo a lighter, more floral style than in the Langhe.
