Castello di Castellengo

Castello di Castellengo

Castello di Castellengo stands in the Biella pre-Alps below Monte Rosa, in the hamlet of Castellengo in Cossato. Wine has been made in its cellars for centuries: the oldest record on file is a 1682 inventory of presses, barrels and vats, and an 1888 ledger shows the Sella estate selling Castellengo wine. Today the wines are made by Centovigne Società Agricola, named for the small vineyards it has recovered on the hills between the castle and Mottalciata.

The range is Nebbiolo-led: Il Centovigne (with Vespolina), the castle-vineyard Castellengo, Rosso della Motta, a rosato called Il Rosa, and two whites, Miranda and the skin-macerated Miranda Osée. The eighteenth-century cellars use concrete tanks and large oak casks. Castellengo sits in the Coste della Sesia DOC, in the Alto Piemonte hills on the Biella side of the Sesia river.
