Alemat Winery

Alemat Winery

Alemat is a family winery in Ponzano Monferrato, in the Alessandria hills of the Monferrato. The name plays on two things: the initials of the owners' sons, Alessandro and Matteo, and the Piedmontese word alemat, "he is crazy", which the family says suits anyone who takes on wine by choice. They call themselves winegrowers by choice, without a long family tradition in the trade.

The range is small: Grignolino as Emilio and as Monferace, aged at least 40 months with 24 in wood, plus Croatina (Brunaldo), Barbera d'Asti Superiore (Augusta), Riesling (Savium), a red from native grapes (Barbacrò) and P.NOT, a Pinot Nero Metodo Classico Extra Brut. The estate farms organically and runs the cellar on solar power and heat pumps. Ponzano lies between Casale Monferrato and Asti, in hills where the infernot cellars carry Unesco status.
