## About

Contratto is a sparkling-wine house in Canelli, founded by Giuseppe Contratto in 1867, and one of the first in Italy to make wine refermented in the bottle. The Bocchino family ran it from 1993, and in 2011 the Rivetti family of La Spinetta bought it. Since then the estate has planted and farmed, exclusively organically, about 30 hectares at 700 to 820 metres around Bossolasco, in the Alta Langa. Three sites, Ave, Moncurto and Porera, grow Pinot Nero and Chardonnay on calcareous marl. The range is Alta Langa DOCG, a Riserva, two Metodo Classico cuvées, and two Asti Spumante called De Miranda. Labels carry the 1920s Cappiello posters. Bottles age in hand-dug cellars, about 5,000 square metres and 38 metres deep, which hold around a million and a half bottles at a constant 13 degrees. Canelli is known for these underground cellars, part of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato UNESCO site.
