# New on the Site: Penna-Currado and Two Costigliole Family Cellars

_The former Vietti couple restart in a 1554 farmhouse, and two Asti family estates bring old Barbera, Moscato and a bell-ringer legend._

Three estates joined Il Vino Bello in the last week, and they make an unusual trio: a famous Langhe couple starting over in a 16th-century farmhouse in Serralunga d'Alba, and two family cellars a couple of kilometres apart on the hills of Costigliole d'Asti. All three welcome visitors.

## Cascina Penna-Currado: starting again in Serralunga

For more than 30 years Luca Currado Vietti made the wines of Vietti, the family house in Castiglione Falletto, while his wife Elena Penna ran sales and marketing. The family sold Vietti to the American businessman Kyle Krause in 2016, and in January 2023 the couple stopped working there for good, according to a press piece the new estate publishes on its own site. That same year they started again with [Cascina Penna-Currado](https://ilvinobello.com/wineries/cascina-penna-currado), run with their children Giulia and Michele.

Home is a farmhouse at the entrance to Serralunga d'Alba, built in 1554 and known first as Santa Giulia and later as Cascina Lazzarito. The estate says it belonged to the Falletti and then to the Opera Pia, which used it as the winery for its Serralunga holdings. Restored, its 2,400 square metres now hold the whole cellar.

Most of the reds come from San Sebastiano, a hamlet of Monforte d'Alba. Decanter reported in March 2024 that the family leases 13 contiguous hectares there, just outside the Barolo zone, out of roughly 20 in all. The estate says the altitude and cool air currents bring a naturally late harvest. The family calls its style "vini a trazione Langa", Langa-driven wines:

- [Bricco Lago Dolcetto d'Alba](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-bricco-lago) revives an experiment Luca made in 1988, his last year at oenology school: fermenting with a large share of whole bunches (60 per cent in the latest vintage on the estate's page), then ageing in concrete.
- [San Sebastiano Nebbiolo d'Alba Superiore](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-san-sebastiano) comes from vines of about 65 years around the hamlet's chapel. The 2024 waited eight days for its native yeasts to start, spent 14 days on the cap after fermentation and 12 months in cask, and was bottled this spring.
- [Bricco Lago Langhe Nebbiolo](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-bricco-lago-2) and [Carrà Barbera d'Alba Superiore](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-carra) also come from San Sebastiano; the estate puts the Barbera vines at 25 to 70 years old.
- [E.P.](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-e-p) is a Timorasso Derthona from Berzano di Tortona, named for Elena, who the estate says has long championed the grape (more in our [Timorasso guide](https://ilvinobello.com/editorial/timorasso-how-a-near-lost-grape-became-piemontes-serious-white)). [Pelà](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-penna-currado-pela) is a Verduno Pelaverga.

The Barolos are still in large oak casks. The estate says they will be available from January 2027, starting with the 2023 vintage; Decanter reported a "classic" Barolo from Verduno, Barolo and Monforte plus two MGA bottlings. The farmhouse lists opening hours (Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 18:30, Sunday 10:00 to 16:00), but no fixed tasting programme, so write or call before going.

## Cascina Sciorio: old Barbera vines in Costigliole

[Cascina Sciorio](https://ilvinobello.com/wineries/cascina-sciorio) sits just outside Costigliole d'Asti, in the Barbera heartland of the Monferrato Astigiano. The estate says brothers Giuseppe and Mauro Gozzelino founded it in the 1990s, carrying on their father's work, and named it after the farmstead where it stands. The family describes about six hectares on a west-facing spur of calcareous clay of marine origin.

The namesake [Sciorio Barbera d'Asti Superiore](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-sciorio) comes from the oldest vines, planted in 1978 and 1986. The estate ages it for about 24 months in medium-sized oak casks, then rests it for another full year before sale. [Vigna Beneficio](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-vigna-beneficio) is the single-vineyard bottling, aged about two years in barrique, and [Vendemmia 1951](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-vendemmia-1951) is the unoaked everyday bottle.

The surprises are the international grapes. [Levi](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-levi), a barrel-fermented Chardonnay from a plot that once held a brick kiln, is one of the 2027 Vitae picks we covered [last week](https://ilvinobello.com/editorial/vitae-2027-piemontes-85-wines-in-aiss-four-lists-of-100). There is also a Syrah, [Furmjia](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-furmjia), and a Cabernet Sauvignon [Monferrato Rosso](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-sciorio-monferrato-rosso) that the family links to the Asinari family's Cabernet plantings around Costigliole in the 1800s. Visits run all year by reservation: a guided walk through the farmstead and cellar, then a tasting.

## Cascina Ciuché: a bell-ringer, the Devil and Barbera

A short drive away in the hamlet of Valcioccaro, [Cascina Ciuché](https://ilvinobello.com/wineries/cascina-ciuche) takes its name from a legend the family tells on its website. A poor bell-ringer, tired of walking to ring the bell on a pillar in the valley, struck a bargain with the Devil and died within a year; "ciuché" is the local word for bell tower.

The Dogliotti family has grown grapes since the early 1900s, when Angelo "Gele" farmed Barbera and Moscato at Castiglione Tinella with his sons Luigi and Remo. Remo moved to Costigliole in 1956, sold his grapes to the cooperatives, then began selling his own wine. His son Angelo took over in 1996 and, with his wife Daniela, renamed the business from "Dogliotti Remo" to Cascina Ciuché. Today Angelo's son Enrico works alongside him. The estate's vineyard page lists more than 21 hectares in Costigliole d'Asti, Agliano Terme and Castelnuovo Calcea.

The range is wide. The flagship [Ventimesi](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-ciuche-ventimesi) is a Nizza from 70-year-old vines in Agliano Terme, named for its 20 months in oak. [Bricco Lu](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-ciuche-bricco-lu) is a Moscato d'Asti whose must, the estate says, is held at minus 2°C before a slow fermentation in pressure tanks stops at about 5 per cent alcohol. [Giulia](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-ciuche-giulia) is the unoaked Barbera d'Asti for the table, and [Nuova Luce](https://ilvinobello.com/wines/cascina-ciuche-nuova-luce) an Alta Langa with 30 months on the lees. Tastings come in three sizes, from three wines (20 euros) to the full range of thirteen (50 euros, booked 48 hours ahead), each with local cured meats and cheese.

## Making a day of it

Sciorio and Ciuché are close enough to visit on the same afternoon, and the Bricco Lu hilltop above Ciuché's Moscato vines has a giant bench and wide views. Costigliole's castle is also where the sixth RossoBarbera tasting runs until today, 2 November, with more than 150 cellars and about 400 wines, according to the Langhe Monferrato Roero tourist board.
